Medical Clinic Design & Adaptive Reuse in Historic Downtown New Roads
New Roads Family Medicine partnered with DNA Workshop to transform an unused building shell into a modern walk-in clinic located in the heart of historic downtown New Roads, Louisiana. The goal was to create a healthcare environment that feels fresh, functional, and welcoming while maintaining the beloved character of the community it serves.

Clinic Renovation: Small Footprint, Major Functionality
This project presented two key challenges that shaped every design decision. First, the footprint of the space – just 1350sf- required highly strategic planning. The interiors needed to support efficient patient flow from check-in to clinical areas, provide privacy throughout the visit, and accommodate essential staff spaces including exam rooms, an office, a kitchenette, restrooms, and storage. Every square foot had to serve a purpose without ever feeling cramped or chaotic.
The second challenge centered on the exterior. Because New Roads is a city with over two centuries of architectural heritage, the updated facade needed to strike a careful balance. Our design team was tasked with modernizing the appearance to match contemporary healthcare standards while still complementing the historic character of surrounding downtown buildings. It was important that the clinic stand out as a new asset for the community while still belonging to the fabric of the neighborhood.

Interior Medical Design: Calm, Comforting, and Contemporary
Once the interior layout was approved, DNA Workshop’s designers worked closely with the physicians to select finishes that would bring the space to life. The aesthetic was inspired by Scandinavian interior design principles. Limewash walls, cool green accents, and soft neutral tones create a calming environment that helps reduce patient stress. Rounded edges were deliberately incorporated throughout to eliminate harsh lines, reinforcing warmth and approachability.
A custom front desk serves as a sculptural centerpiece for the lobby. Crafted with beveled plaster, curved corners, and a limewashed finish, it establishes a sense of sophistication from the moment patients walk in. The New Roads Family Practice logo is prominently displayed on a modern plexiglass sign, creating a polished brand presence.
Architectural details help expand the perceived space. Arched openings mark the transition between lobby and care areas, while glass doors separate the office and kitchenette without interrupting sightlines. The overall flow remains intuitive, allowing patients to move through their appointment with comfort and privacy.

Historic Adaptive Reuse: A Modern Facade with Community Roots
The updated exterior carries the same design priorities outside the walls. Sleek black Hardie paneling and black-framed windows create a clean, modern face for the building, while also allowing the warm interior design to be visible from the street. The original brick remains preserved at the edges as a tribute to the building’s history and the architectural culture of downtown New Roads. The result is a sophisticated elevation that acknowledges the past while embracing the future of local healthcare.

Results: A Modern Healthcare Hub for New Roads
DNA Workshop delivered a space that feels upscale yet approachable, functional yet beautifully designed. The physicians were thrilled with the transformation, and the community has responded with enthusiasm and support. The clinic now stands as a shining example of how thoughtful medical clinic design and historic adaptive reuse can work hand-in-hand to uplift neighborhoods.
